Performance evaluation of the ducted vertical axis wind turbine for domestic applications

Wind energy may play a great role in energy and water management in urban and smart cities. This paper studies the performance of the ducted wind turbine enhanced with convergent, divergent and convergent-divergent ducting systems. Vertical axis ducted wind turbine was designed, constructed, analysed and evaluated theoretically and experimentally. Result of both approaches was presented and compared with experimental results. They showed good closeness for the two cases of ducting. Various ducting systems for enhancing the performance of the wind turbines was used. Results of the ducted wind turbine were compared with those of the non-ducted wind turbine having the same specifications. Power coefficient of the proposed ducted wind turbine was enhanced by 9.0% to 39% using ducting systems with different opening. The construction, implementation and simulation of the wind energy was found easy to conduct, scaled up and duplicated. These configurations have good profitability to be installed in buildings and smart cities.
