Intelligent Helmet for Miners

Safety is a very important concern for every human being, a lite carelessness will lead to unexpected hazards and some of them may lead to loss of life. One of the most unsafe industry to work is mining industries, and the life of miners are always at a risk. There are lot of dangerous accidents which cause more death of miners are reported from mines located in different countries. The major reason for those hazards are, the concentration of the gases like methane gas and CNG (compressed natural gas) and other harmful gases which expose from underneath of earth while excavation, next main reason is the removal of helmet by miners and it increases chances of head injuries. The monitoring of miners health and the unusual events happens on the mine by supervisor will improve the safety and very useful for avoiding big accidents. This project attempts to develop a sensor integrated intelligent helmet for miners which increases the safety parameters of mines. Sensors used in this helmet are the force sensor, gas sensor, temperature sensor and IR sensor (infra red) . All quantities of sensors measured by the Arduino microcontroller based development board interfaced to the sensors and communicated to the base station via wireless sensor network (WSN) created by NRF modules. The base station module consists of raspberry pi with monitor and an alert system. Real-time events like helmet removal by miner, different gases and temperature levels variations in working space, and collisions are displayed on the monitor placed in the control room (base station). The alert system activates for every unexpected events and the supervisor can monitor it from the graphical user interface (GUI) developed in raspberry pi.
