Solar Water Heating Thermal Performance Test using an Outdoor Test Method

The main objective of this experimental work was to perform a solar water heater test according to SANS 6211-1:2012 standard by constructing a solar test facility at the Stellenbosch University that would serve as a test centre of excellence. The initial phase of this experimental work involved conducting a survey of existing equipment on the roof top laboratory in order to assess whether its capabilities conform to the SANS 6211–1: 2012 standard. The complete solar test facility was designed and assembled including the design and installation of a cross flow fan. The logistics and mechanics of the experiment ran successfully with the only exception that the temperature control mechanism was not achieved. This research was further accentuated due to the lack of dedicated solar test facilities in African Institutions of higher learning and research.
