The Protective Effect of Ethanolic Extract of Syzygium Polyanthum on the Pancreas of Benzene-Induced Rats

Benzene is one of the most polluting aromatic hydrocarbon chemicals and is highly absorbable from oral exposure, inhalation, and even skin contact. In health, benzene is very detrimental where it forms free radicals that can damage pancreatic beta cells. Syzygium polyanthum is one type of plant that is often used by the community as a food flavoring ingredient and also as a traditional medicine. In this study, the effect of the ethanolic extract of Syzygium polyanthum as a protective pancreas in benzene-induced rats was identified. In the experiment, rats were treated for 21 days with extract doses of 400, 600 and 800 mg/kg, respectively, and administration of benzene every 3 and 6 days. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of Syzygium polyanthum was able to reduce blood sugar, HbA1c, and trypsinogen statistically p<0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the ethanolic extract of Syzygium polyanthum has a protective effect on the pancreas.
