Chapter Abstract:

Protective relays make the trip decisions based on power system quantities such voltage, current, frequency, etc. In the industry, protective relays have experienced mainly three generations of evolution: electromechanical relays, solid‐state relays, and numerical relays. This chapter presents a multifunction protection system based on the hardware emulation building block concept, which has been successfully used to emulate detailed models for other power system equipment on the field‐programmable gate array (FPGA). The entire hardware design is implemented in VHDL in 32 (64)‐bit floating point format for high accuracy. Test cases are set up to verify the functions of the protection system. Test cases are used to demonstrate the efficacy of the hardware multifunction protection system. New protection algorithms based on traveling waves and transient signals can be developed on the FPGA.
