Co-Optimizing the Siting and Sizing of Batteries and the Siting of Isolation Devices in Distribution Systems

This paper presents an optimization model to help distribution system planners to site and size battery energy storage systems (BESSs) and to site isolation devices. The purpose is twofold: (i) to enhance system reliability and (ii) to generate revenue by taking advantage of energy arbitrage. Our work fills a research gap regarding the optimal coordination of the siting of BESSs and isolation devices. Input data for the model includes utility historical load and fault data. This data is used to generate multiple scenarios pertaining to normal and faulted operating conditions. The proposed optimization model is recast as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem and solved using a commercial solver. It is successfully applied in a real-world case study.
