Design of a Nonlinear Excitation Controller for Single Machine Infinite Bus Power Systems to Improve the Transient Stability

In this paper mainly designing of a nonlinear excitation controller for synchronous generators (SGs) in a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) power network by combining the concept of the partial feedback linearization and nonlinear backstepping schemes has been presented. This proposed nonlinear backstepping partial feedback linearizing controller (BS-PFBLC) has been designed for the enhancement of the transient stability of power systems below acute disturbances. The partial feedback linearization scheme has been used for linearizing the third-order model into a second-order linearized system which is independent of the unmeasurable rotor angle. After that the nonlinear backstepping control scheme is applied to the partially feedback linearized system to get the excitation control input while assuring the convergence of transformed states. Finally, simulation studies are conducted on an SMIB system below a severe three line-to-ground fault for analyzing the transient stability of power networks. To ensure the superiority of the BS-PFBLC, the performance has been compared with an excitation controller which designs by mean of the partial feedback linearization scheme.
