Digital Design of Fuzzy Logic Controller for Optical Beam Steering in Free Space Optical Communication

Free Space Optical Communication is one of the most promising approach to address the emerging free space optical communication access network. The terrestrial FSOC systems advantageous are: no mutual interference, capability of high data rates, radio regulation free wireless connectivity, fast and easy installation, difficult eavesdropping on transmitted data and relatively low cost. However, due to adverse weather conditions the laser power attenuation is to be mitigated in order to establish the reliable high speed data communication. In this paper, design and implementation of an Adaptive Fuzzy Logic Controller (AFLC) in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) as a Closed Loop Control Configuration (CLCC) for mitigating the atmospheric adverse effects is described. The developed Opto-electronic architecture for Aligning, Tracking and Positioning (ATP) the laser beam in order to enhance the performance of the FSOC is also presented. The experimental results are analyzed.
