Nanogrids in India: A conceptual solution for off grid/rural electrification

A large number of people in India live in rural or isolated communities without access to grid‐based electric power because large‐scale production plants primarily serve urban areas and there is a substantial transmission and distribution cost. Nanogrid is a hybrid renewable system that uses renewable sources and storage to supply power to small local loads. Nanogrid is typically designed such that renewable sources supply the load demand, while storage is used to ensure that the loads enjoy a continuous supply of power in the presence of the stochastic renewable sources. The study introduces the concept of nanogrid and location specific distributed generations (DGs) and distributed energy resource (DERs), affordable by local government standards to respond to the electricity demand of a typical village in rural area or isolated area, is the one with renewable energy sources respectively in a country like India. The research has significant and probable potential to reduce poverty globally by improving the availability of power which affects the health, education, and economic burden of the society. This work assesses technical, economic, environmental, and social impacts of nanogrid applications in those areas which do not have electricity access.
