Study of the Effects of Magnetic Pole Arrangement on Braking Torque of Eddy Current Brakes

Currently, demand for aircraft continues to grow and is expected to increase by a factor of 2.2 in the next 20 years. Meanwhile, due to growing awareness of the global climate, research on the electrification of aircraft is being conducted around the world to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The authors propose an eddy current brake (ECB), which can be easily controlled electronically, for the electrification of aircraft. In this paper, the influence of magnetic pole arrangement on the eddy current induced in the disc was investigated using FEM analysis, and the effect of the magnetic pole arrangement on the braking torque was confirmed with experimental equipment.
