Fully integrated neural stimulation system (FINESS)

Presents a fully integrated telemetrically powered functional nerve stimulation system consisting of a BiCMOS integrated circuit and an external Class E transmitter. The integrated circuit chip can deliver a biphasic waveform up to 2 mA of current to 8 sets of bipolar stimulating electrodes of 1.5 k/spl Omega/ impedance. The output current is programmable in 65 /spl mu/A steps and it can stimulate up to 2 ms in steps of 16 /spl mu/s. The whole chip consumes 25 mW of power under maximum stimulation conditions and less than 10 mW under no stimulation conditions. The control and data signals are sent with a pulse width modulation protocol using pulse amplitude modulation on a 4 MHz carrier wave using a class E transmitter.
