SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS STANDARDS

This chapter addresses some aspects of a satellite communications system that go beyond digital communications theory, and introduces the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) communications model. The OSI model of the communications functions of a telecommunications system offers a framework for understanding how these things work. The chapter summarizes the second generation of Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) standards for satellite communications. DVB was originally designed for terrestrial broadcast of digital television and is used by many broadcasters worldwide for this purpose. Satellite earth stations and systems (SES) Broadband provides broadband Internet services to Newtec's Sat3Play user terminals. Sat3Play implements part of the Satmode specification. SES Broadband is a two‐way satellite broadband Internet service provided across Europe by the Astra series of spacecraft. The SES Broadband maximum download speed has been increased to 10Mbps and the upload speed to 256Kbps.
