Compact Multibeam Metasurface Lens Antenna with Circular Polarization for 5G Millimeter-Wave Application

In this article, we introduce a compact multibeam metasurface lens (MSL) antenna with circular polarization for 5G millimeter-wave applications. The constituent meta-atom composed of two coupled slotted patch resonators can achieve a continuous phase shift covering 360° range by rotating the upper patch for circular polarizations. Utilizing three microstrip patch antennas as the feeding sources, the MSL antenna can provide radiating beam along vertical or ± 30° from vertical direction. and a focal-to-diameter ratio of 0.11. The maximum gain for vertical or ± 30° from vertical beam is 13.8, or 12.3 dBi around 27 GHz, respectively. The proposed design features the advantages of compact size, easy integration, low cost and light weight, which may be further used for multibeam or beam scanning applications in modern wireless communication.
