A Novel LVDC Superconducting Power Distribution System for Data Center With Power Quality Improvement and Loss Reduction

The rapid charging/discharging feature from a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) unit suits to smooth the transient voltage and power fluctuations, while the zero-resistance effect from a superconducting cable (SC) is favored for achieving highly efficient power delivery with nearly zero energy loss in most of the energy-intensive data centers. This paper investigates a novel low-voltage direct-current (LVDC) superconducting power distribution scheme by using a combined superconducting power technology employing both SMES and SC devices. Preliminary simulations demonstrate the feasibility of this SMES-SC-based LVDC system to improve the power quality and reduce the transmission loss simultaneously.
