An Image Recognition-based Distance Measurement Technique for Real-time Locating of Construction Workers

Real-time location of construction workers is crucial information for site safety management as the construction accidents usually happen instantly when the workers are facing dangerous hazards. Previous methods for developing Real-time Locating System (RTLS) are either imprecise enough or too expensive for practical applications. This paper presents an Image Recognition-based Distance Measurement Technique that achieved 2.13% average error rate or 15 cm distance error. It outperforms other RTLS techniques including RFID, GPS, VA, WLAN, and is close to NFC and UWB but much more cost-effective and easily implemented.
