Transient Response Analysis of Short-Circuit Electromagnetic Force on the Rotor Teeth of a High-Speed Generator

A high-speed (HS) synchronous generator with the hidden pole was explored in this study. To obtain the mechanical properties on the rotor tooth of the HS generator under the dual action of centrifugal force and electromagnetic (EM) force, the transient response of the rotor was analyzed based on a process that could be summarized as follows. First, the mathematical models of the energy method, the LIVENS and Maxwell stress tensor methods were compared and a simple finite element model was analyzed. The results show that the LIVENS stress tensor method has more general applicability and is more suitable for solving the local EM force of ferromagnetic materials. Second, the EM force of the rotor teeth of the generator was calculated by the LIVENS stress tensor method. The results show that the EM torque of the generator is mainly distributed in the rotor tooth. Third, the transient response of the rotor under short-circuit was calculated by the FEA, the results show that the short-circuit EM force has a small effect on the structural stress of the rotor and can be almost ignored, which meet the design requirements of the HS generator.
