CMPC-based Controller for Load Frequency Regulation of Interconnected Power System Integrated with BESS

A large number of frequency fluctuations may have a negative impact on the safe and stable operation of large-scale power systems, so the present work focuses on the design of a load frequency control (LFC) scheme based on centralized model predictive control (CMPC). Firstly, a frequency response model of a two-area interconnected power system, containing wind power, hydropower, thermal power, and battery energy storage system (BESS), is established. Next, on the basis of the system state-space model, the predictive model and optimization objective function are derived employing recursion. Finally, combined with physical constraints, the optimization problem is converted into a standard quadratic programming (QP) problem. Extensive simulations are executed to test and verify the availability of the proposed scheme. The results reveal that the mentioned system gives an active reaction to the CMPC controller regarding load disturbances and wind power grid connection.
