Simulation Tools for Validation of Smart Grid

This chapter discusses the current state of simulation‐based approaches including multi‐domain simulation, co‐simulation, and real‐time simulation and hardware‐in‐the‐loop for the smart grid (SG). Simulation‐based evaluation software has become a more valuable tool for power system planning, designing, and analysis since the introduction of more sophisticated computation solutions. Planning and analysis of the SG are becoming more complex as the components in the power system have grown in size and the number of interconnections has increased. Top features of Power systems computer aided design (PSCAD) include its Python‐based automation library that allows users to call PSCAD functions via custom scripts. Simulation software for electrical network modeling and analyzing is electrical transient analyzer program. GridLab‐D is flexible, agent‐based simulation engine that allows users to explore a wide variety of analyses or even constructing new scenarios during runtime. The chapter summarizes some SG planning and analysis software with their advantages and disadvantages.
