Building the Ontology of Cognitive Functions

The paper investigates the possibilities of using the ontological approach in neurocognitive science and presents the results of building an ontology of cognitive functions. The developed ontology is intended for the accumulation of interdisciplinary knowledge necessary for the study of cognitive functions through which the process of rational knowledge of the world is carried out. The paper proposes a conceptual structure for understanding the relationship between patterns of brain activity and human cognitive abilities. The ontology was implemented using the Protégé 5.2. The ontology accumulates knowledge about cognitive functions and methods of their assessment using neuropsychological tests and EEG methods. A distinctive feature of the proposed ontology from existing ones is the inclusion of concepts that reflect the terminology used in the study of cognitive functions from the standpoint of analyzing psychometric and neurophysiological data, as well as knowledge about combinations of electrodes and features that can be used in machine learning from EEG data to identify patterns of brain activity.
