Simulation of Land Clutter for Surveillance Radar Based on Reflected Power Dataset

The paper proposes a model of land clutter for radar environment simulating systems. One of the main tasks in simulating land clutter is the construction of a digital terrain model describing its reflective properties. The larger the sample interval, the fewer calculations are required to simulate the echo signal. On the other side, a too-large step results in significant errors in its parameters. The model presented in the paper is a set of samples, each of which describes the power of the echo signal at a definite antenna turning angle. In this case, the power of the echo signal at angles not specified in the model can be calculated by low-pass filtering of the available samples. Expressions for determining the sample interval based on the distribution of terrain reflection and the radar parameters were obtained. Using this model allows reducing the number of calculations to simulate the echo signal. The simulation results confirm the findings.
