Microwave holography and the location of knife-edge obstacles on line of sight microwave routes

The problem of determining the positions of (multiple) knife-edge obstacles on line-of-sight microwave routes directly from standard height-intensity measurements is treated theoretically. The analysis invokes holographic principles, the height-intensity distribution itself being regarded as a (microwave) hologram. The necessary processing is performed digitally, and is based on the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm. It is demonstrated that edge location in two dimensions (range and height) is impractical. The ‘quality’ of the I-D (height only) image of a scattering edge is shown to be improved in the case of simultaneous scanning of source and receiver. The problem of noise is simulated and the effect of a finite-size receiving aperture is discussed.
