Numerical Study of Thermal Transport in Channel Flows Enhanced with Single and Multi Air Jet Impingement Cooling and Structured Target Surfaces

The advancement in electronic systems and the increase in processing times have resulted in greater circuit densities for electronic components. That leads to higher thermal loads and so the need for innovative cooling systems. The cooling technologies are required to provide high thermal dissipation rates to keep the temperature of the electronic devices below the safe temperature. Jet impingement in confined channels is one of the efficient cooling technologies to be employed for electronics cooling. Alternatively, extended and structured surfaces can result in heat transfer augmentation. In this work, multi jet impingement in confined channels employing surface turbulator is numerically analyzed with application in electronics cooling. Validation study is performed comparing the obtained numerical results with the experimental data in literature. To make sure the results are independent from grid size and resolution, grid independence study is done. The effects of single and multi jet impingement, uniform and rib structured channels, jet Reynolds number, rib size, rib distance and applied heat flux value are investigated and flow field characteristics are analyzed.
