Sizing and Placement of Community Energy Storage Systems using Multi-Period Optimal Power Flow

In this paper, sizing and placement of a community storage at a district level using Multi-Period Power Flow is analyzed. A case study including high shares of photovoltaics in the low voltage CIGRÉ residential subnetwork is taken as reference. The optimum storage capacity allocation in a time-resolved manner taking into account photovoltaics sizing and power flow conditions is a central part of this work. In addition, conditions for self-sufficiency have been integrated into the model and different location for allocation of the storage device will be analyzed. Simulation results are investigated with three cost scenarios using synthetic loads and photovoltaic profiles. The results show that different places can be found for the community storage due to different degrees of self-sufficiency in the scenarios. When determining the perfect place for central stationary electrical storages, the central node with minimum total impedance represents a good option. Economic benefits of installing a community storage can be demonstrated for two scenarios, while power export dominates another one.
