RF Transmitter Localization Method Comparison using RSS Measurements from Drift Nodes

This paper investigates localization of an RF transmitter using received signal strength (RSS) at different drift nodes. Four methods are implemented and their performance is compared. The first method is Koo and Cha’s linear closed-form solution. The second is a modified version of Bancroft’s closed-form solution to the GPS equations. The third method relies on the Gauss-Newton (GN) algorithm. The final method is a Force-Field algorithm inspired by potential field navigation.
