Hybrid Control of Renewable Based Microgrid Synchronized to 3P4W AC Distribution Network

The power industry is considerably focusing on the microgrid utilizing renewable based generation and a battery energy storage (BES). These microgrid ensure lower cost and lower overhead of tenancy. Here, in this work, wind and solar power based microgrid is interfaced to a 3 phase-4 wire (3P4W) AC distribution network/grid with a hybrid control scheme. This hybrid control scheme consists of mode shifting tendency in case of grid outage. The battery resiliency generates additional revenue by ensuring the operation during grid outage mode by reducing the downtime expense. In the case of grid failure, the control seamlessly transits from current control to voltage control. The grid connected and standalone mode of operation are enabled according to the signal provided to the static transfer switches (STS). The system control eradicates the intermittency issues raised by the renewable resources. The battery along with the mode transition control, provides an improvement in the power quality (PQ) while ensuring the power supply reliability and surety in feeding the local loads. The modified leaky adaptive linear element adaptive (MLA) filter is used to extract the fundamental load current component in on-grid operating mode. The enhanced proportional resonant (PR) controller is utilized for the voltage control mode. The system performance is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink environment and the co-operational behavior of the microgrid is observed for different practical conditions.
