Assessment of Power Quality Disturbance by the Discrete Wavelet Packet Transform implemented on the FPGA Platform

Online estimation of power quality disturbance (PQD) is one of the significant issues among various power quality indices in the electrical power distribution system. This paper proposes the FPGA implementation of the discrete wavelet packet transform (DWPT) technique for the real-time assessment of PQD. The DWPT technique equally divides the signal's frequency spectrum at the output end and provides coefficients as the output, making this approach more suitable in tracking the PQD. Here, the DWPT decomposition tree has been constructed with the FIR filters in which Daubechies wavelets are utilized as the mother wavelet. The hardware implementation of the DWPT method has been successfully completed on the Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA AC-701 board. The proposed technique has been examining by experimental test signals generated via MATLAB/Simulink software. The obtained results revealed that the DWPT technique implemented on the FPGA board utilizes significantly fewer hardware resources. The proposed method's robustness and accuracy make them suitable for the online estimation of odd harmonics and tracking of voltage swells, voltage dips, and momentary interruptions.
