Design and Testing of a Medium Frequency Transformer

This paper investigates analysis, design and testing of a medium frequency transformer (MFT) for solid-state-transformer (SST) applications. Characterization of the transformer is studied and an optimization procedure is introduced. A 20kW, 50kHz prototype with 7.3kW/L power density is built, which has been tested to estimate its parameters, efficiency and insulation. Experiments show that the MFT prototype reaches 99.6% efficiency.
