Standardization of transformers

Generally speaking standardization in any sphere is a means whereby maintenance can be simplified, costs reduced, productivity increased, production stabilized, and availability assured. One sphere where it could be beneficially applied is the one that we are discussing tonight — distribution transformers. As pointed out earlier, the Republic's annual requirements of transformers is about 2 000. While this number is large enough to justify local manufacture it is dangerously near the lower limit for economic production because of the number of factories operating in the Republic. This means that everything must be done to help the manufacturer obtain reasonably economical production runs. Standardizing of tanks, cores, conservators, windings, and insulator bushings by reducing the variety produced must of necessity keep costs down. In a competitive field such as exists in transformer manufacture, these lower manufacturing costs are passed on to the consumer together with the further advantages of simplified purchasing, short delivery times and ease of replacement.
