Two Stage Electric Vehicle Battery Charger With On-Board Topology

With the advancement of power electronics technology, Electric vehicle battery charging applications have get more relevant today. This paper introduces a two-stage on-board electric vehicle battery charger. The proposed converters comprise of power factor corrected bridgeless interleaved boost converter and phase-shifted full-bridge converter. The bridgeless topology of the front-end converter eliminates the use of a conventional diode bridge rectifier. Compared to other bridgeless topology requires fewer switching components and can be operated with Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) in standard limits. The battery side converter is a full-bridge converter that is used for isolation purposes. It is driven with phase-shifted Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) with zero voltage switching (ZVS) for increasing efficiency. The modes of the proposed converter are explained here. The circuit is simulated on MATLAB software, and THD obtained is 2.39% is within International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards and the output voltage is 288V.
