A Singapore Case Study of an Optimal Operation Framework for Urban Micro-grids

With the increased adoption of solar photovoltaic systems in the city state, there is a growing potential for realization of grid-connected micro-grids in the urban environment. This work presents an operational framework for the potential Singapore Institute of Technology campus micro-grid test case in Punggol district in Singapore. In addition to the solar potential in the campus, this study explores the adoption of other flexible future assets in the campus including flexible district cooling system, electric vehicle charging stations, and battery energy storage systems, as potential distributed energy resources of the micro-grid. The micro-grid is envisioned to participate in the Singapore wholesale energy and reserves market for optimal reliability and economic benefits. The paper describes different market scenarios that the micro-grid operator can exploit to generate revenue with the help of the proposed energy management system.
