Analysis of Indicator and Effective Parameters of Automotive and Locomotive Gas-Diesel Engines Operating in Similar Modes

An electronic control system and modular gas supply system for automotive and locomotive gas diesel engines were developed in the Moscow Automobile and Road Construction State Technical University (MADI). The systems were experimentally perfected on the automotive gas diesel engine and high fuel efficiency, high substitution of diesel fuel by natural gas and low toxic emissions were obtained. To use these systems on a locomotive gas diesel engine, one should demonstrate that indicated parameters of these engines are close in similar operation conditions. Professor A.S. Khachiyan proposed a hypothesis that at equal mean piston speeds, mean indicated pressure and air excess coefficient, indicated parameters of the engines that differ significantly in size will be close due to the mutual compensation of the relative heat losses into the walls. Compared to an automotive gas diesel engine, the relative heat loses of a locomotive gas diesel engine drop due to a decrease in the relative heat exchange surface and increase due to a longer contact time of the working medium with the in-cylinder walls. The calculations carried out at two speeds and loads of the automotive and locomotive gas diesel engines showed close indicator parameters, though effective parameters of the locomotive gas-diesel engine were higher due to a higher turbocharger efficiency. Also the influence of the parameters of the I.Vibe formula on the gas diesel engine performance were studied.
