Energy Storage in Smart Electrical Grids

The goal of the study presented in this paper is to highlight the different technologies used for storage of energy and how they can be applied in smart grids. Most of the modern energy technologies, such as the use of smart grids, are shifting to the exploitation of renewable energy sources (RES). Various energy storage (ES) systems including mechanical, electrochemical and thermal system storage are discussed. Battery energy storage system is the most common ES technology currently being used because of its low cost. Other ES technologies discussed include hydro, pump hydroelectric and thermal ES, including latent, sensible and thermochemical. Addressing each of these issues would ensure that the smart grids are strong and intelligent enough as an innovative network.
