The Python/Jupyter Ecosystem: Today’s Problem-Solving Environment for Computational Science

The EiC looks back on a concept presented in CiSE’s inaugural issue: that of problem-solving environments, with a promise to be ‘all things to all people’ in computational science. Reviewing the progress over the past decades of the Python ecosystem for scientific computing, and the coverage in CiSE, she makes the case that Python and Jupyter today provide that rich environment that can make computational scientists most productive. This editorial anticipates the next issue, when CiSE will feature scientific applications that embody the powerful idea of combining high researcher productivity via Python and high performance through code generation, just-in-time compilation, or exploiting advanced Python libraries.
