Abstract:

It is a very common matter that due to the huge popularity of social media, any matter around us, especially any movement, is greatly stimulated by the impact of social media. We can see a parallel contribution on Twitter, Facebook or some other popular social media on every protest. We have noticed the power of hashtags in all recent movements. In this paper we will try to show the impact of social media on protest by including the example data of Bangladesh road safety movement. For Ground protest information we collect national and international newspapers front page coverage as references. Another information source was Twitter. We will use a social media monitoring tool to collect Twitter hashtags information. After that we will made a comparative analysis of the newspaper's coverage as ground protest nature, and Twitter hashtags as social media impact. Finally, we will try to show that how the social media, Twitter influence the ground movement.

I. Introduction

Nowadays twitter is a very common social media with huge users. Researchers have inspected the trends followed on Twitter to diffuse such social revolutions in order to fix the influence and span, constructed by them [1] [2], We have seen that in recent movements Twitter directly influences the movements. As an example we can mention the Arab spring, which started in Tunisia in December 2010. This revolution spreads very fast to another few Arab countries. Algeria, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Palestine and Morocco were on the list [3]. Nowadays people are more dependent on social media like Twitter, Facebook. Analyzing Twitter data is very difficult [4]. In this paper, we have focused on analyzing tweets and mainstream media coverage at the revolution time. Simply we can say that we show a comparative discussion on Twitter activities and newspaper coverage of a revolution widely known as “Road Safety Movement” in Bangladesh. Bangladesh is a country of the South Asian subcontinent. The main target of this paper is to analyze whether there is any impact of twitter hashtag on ground protest or not. The “Road Safety Protest” started on July 29, 2018 and later spread to all over the country. The protestors demand, ensuring a safe road in Bangladesh [5]. University students, School students of Bangladesh also raise their voice for safety. A huge impact is also seen on Twitter during protest time. Lots of tweets were posted with relevant hashtags during the protest. In table 1 we have shown some hashtags and their descriptions. In this paper our target is to show the impact of social media on any movement. Major hashtags of road safety movement.
