Synchronized Phasor Measurements for Power System Digital Control Applications

This paper considers a case of phasor measurement technology application for estimating the power system state. A state estimation algorithm with an iterative solution method is proposed. The unique capabilities of phasor measurement units (PMU) [1] are discussed, which can be used due to the existence of the global positioning system (GPS) and high-speed digital communications allowing prompt real-time monitoring of transient processes. This paper demonstrates the results of a sample simulation of a power system operating in various modes using PMU to estimate the power system state. The efficiency assessment of the phasor measurement technology applied in the field of power system equipment control is provided compared to the conventional control scheme. The main advantages of this technology are described, which make it very promising for application.
