Simulation And Application Of New Focusing Strategies Of Ultrasonic Phased Array Testing

A single focus is formed to maintain a high detection resolution through controlling the element's excitation time in ultrasonic phased array testing. However, the testing resolution and sensitivity outside of focus area may be decreased. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new focusing strategies for multiple focusing in a specific application. Firstly, three kinds of new focusing strategies were proposed for controlling focusing sound field. Secondly, the Finite Element Method (FEM) was adopted to analyze the characteristics of sound field. Finally, the testing capabilities of focusing strategies for the near-surface and the far-surface testing were investigated by experiments. The results indicate that the experimental results are consistency with finite element simulation, which can be used to assist in the design of the focusing strategies. The new focusing strategies make full use of the array resources can flexibly control the focused sound field to satisfy some special testing requirements.
