Piezoelectric Throat Microphone Based Voice Analysis

Throat microphone or laryngophone signals are generally used in gaming and military communication due to their robustness to environmental noise. This paper provides an analysis of the use of a throat microphone for voice parameter acquisition. Throat microphone signals are captured directly from vibrations of the larynx. Voice collected from 11 volunteers who had no history of evaluated voice disorders, and three volunteers with mild voice disorders has been used for the analysis. Results indicate that the throat microphone signals give an accurate idea about voice parameters of male speakers but are not suitable for voice analysis of female speakers, due to the laryngeal prominence present in males.
