Conventional Method for Electrical Transmission System Fault Location Detection

The rapid expansion in the power system has led to substantial growth in the number of transmission overhead lines in service over the past decades. These lines encounter faults that must be mitigated before returning the line to operation to recover the consumers' connection. The repair can be accelerated if the pinpointing of the fault can be determined with sufficient precision. The exact determination of the position of transmission line faults has been a challenge for service engineers, designers, and researchers over the last few years. Thus, the fault locating technique allows engineers to pinpoint where the fault occurred in a highly logical timeframe. This fault locating method is required to pinpoint where the fault on the power lines occurred. Several transmission lines are 100 kilometers long; thus, making it time-consuming to find the fault's position. The longer it takes the field engineers to find the fault locality, the higher production losses. Therefore, it is essential to pinpoint the exact locality of the fault to save time and money. The paper proposes a model developed in MATLAB software to study the faults that exist in the transmission line. The model consists of a fault location detection element to pinpoint the exact position of the fault on the line. This paper focuses on fault tracking on the transmission overhead line utilizing a conventional approach. The model will be improved utilizing advanced methods to improve the overall speed and accuracy.
