Design of a Cooling System for Micro-coaxial Antennas in the Treatment of Bone Tumours without Affecting the Ablation Zone: FEM Models

One of the main problems in thermal therapies implementing interstitial antennas for the treatment of tumors generating thermal ablation, is the warming back of the antennas reaching temperatures higher than 50°C due to the electromagnetic energy flowing through it, which causes skin burns and damage in the healthy tissue. To avoid the warming back of the antennas, the implementation of a cooling system is proposed. This article proposes the incorporation of a cooling system for micro-coaxial antennas. A study based on FEM models, to analyze the limitations and the advantages of this system was carried out. The results show a temperature reduction in healthy tissue layers of 9.5°C without affecting the area of necrotic tissue. These results were achieved by using an input power of 5W for 15 minutes of radiation.
