LiDAR Sensors Used for Improving Safety of Electronic-Controlled Vehicles

Determining the distance to an object, it's size and shape is a practical aspect for many current technical applications, such as remote detection, counting moving objects, electronic boards component placing, creating topographical maps or electron microscopy.A LiDAR system uses the principle of measuring time of flight of an optical signal to determine the distance between the camera and the object, by transmitting a light signal to the object, the signal is generated by a laser or LED. Laser-using systems belong to a category called LiDAR scannerless where the entire object is streaked with the pulse of light, in contrast to systems in which the object is scanned point by point.This paper highlighted the principles of determining absolute distance and relative speed by optical means, as well as identifies the main LiDAR modules available on the market.The most important application of this method is the frontal distance long-range measurement used for vehicles. This paper`s recommendations will be used for selecting LIDAR sensor and control electronics, which can be used to make mobile experimental models for measuring distance and relative speed of vehicles.Since not all Manufacturers of LiDAR modules are presenting their product's technical characteristics and performances under the same test conditions, the authors recommend a platform to test these sensors in the form of experimental models on which can be performed comparative tests of available sensors.Several tests performed using the experimental model are presented and interpreted for the use of future research.
