Design and Analysis of High Gain Planar Inverted-F Antenna (PIFA) for Wimax and Nomadic Applications

This article proposes the design of high gain planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) and simulated by using AWR microwave office. The gain of the antenna is about 12 dB and broad bandwidth of 500 MHz is obtained. Return loss of 30 dB is achieved at the 2.3 GHz resonating frequency. The broad bandwidth is achieved due to the length of slot which measures 25.3 mm×1.2 mm. varying this slot and ground plane 29.9 mm ×8.9 mm, by tuning these two, optimized bandwidth is obtained. The width of shorting plates is 1.1 mm for optimized bandwidth. Going even further, the ground plane of size 29.9 mm×8.9 mm is designed to increase the radiation efficiency of antenna. The proposed PIFA is relatively small and looks like shape of `Q'. The simulation is carried out by considering 50Ω impedance port with feed line. Due to this we get an advantage that radiation is away from the ground plane and this gives low value of specific absorption rate (SAR) in mobile communication application. High gain PIFA can be used in many applications such as Wi-Fi, ISM band, LTE and nomadic applications.
