Three-Level Inverters for Induction Motor Driven Electric Vehicles

This paper presents the application of three-level cascaded H-bridge (3L-CHB) inverter and three-level neutral point clamped (3L-NPC) inverter for induction motor (IM) drive for Electric Vehicles in comparison to Two-level voltage source inverter (2L-VSI). The complete IM drive is modelled and simulated in MATLAB Simulink environment with above three inverters for variation of speed and torque. Comparative analysis of the obtained simulation results is carried out for all the three inverters on the basis of common performance parameters. The presented simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of three-level inverters for improvement of power quality at motor terminals thereby reduction of losses in the motor and enhancement of EV range.
