EMC Assessment on SpaceWire Link ELF Magnetic Behavior for Modeling Purposes

An indefeasible part of any space mission design is the interconnecting wiring of the mission's units. As a result, any emissions produced by the latter are of vital importance regarding the Electromagnetic Compatibility of the whole spacecraft design. Within the context of the project “Modeling Electromagnetic Emissions of Space Equipment for EMC and Cleanliness Purposes”, this work's objective is to assess the magnetic behavior of a link created in accordance with the SpaceWire standard ECSS-E-ST-50-12C.Rev. 1. Specifically, it aims to evaluate the link through its radiated ELF magnetic field emissions and to identify any existing correlation between their level and the characteristics of the transmission, namely the link rate and the packet size. After performing various measurements, the results suggest that the operation of the link produces some distinct spectral components at frequencies which vary depending on the link's characteristics. Moreover, further emissions emerge within a certain frequency range, when a combination of high link rate and large packet size is implemented in the transmission. These measurement results and their corresponding analysis will be utilized further to model the magnetic behavior of the link.
