Simulator of Decentralized Control Strategies in Electrical Grids

Modern electrical grids are going through a series of challenging transformations, primarily due to the penetration of a large number of distributed generation units and active elements based on power electronics. A large body of existing software packages and tools for simulation of electrical power grids were proposed to curtail the difficulties associated with the power grid evolution and development. However, simulating the behavior of electrical converters at the switching level can be too detailed and resource-consuming, which makes them unsuitable for grids with a large number of elements. On the other hand, power-flow simulators focus on the steady-state analysis and are suitable for large-scale grids, but neglect transient effects and network dynamics. The present work proposes a simulation framework which is suitable for medium-to-large electrical grids, with a special emphasis on the decentralized grid operation, whilst addressing network transients. The results that verify the effectiveness of the proposed simulator are presented.
