Optimization of Electro-Zipping Actuators Using Dielectric Elastomers as Insulating Layer

Coulomb forces have been harnessed in a variety of small scale actuators. Conventionally, because of necessary small gaps between electrodes, they have been primarily been used in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Here a concept is proposed to upscale electrostatic zipping actuators (EZA) using dielectic elastomers (DE) as insulating layers to ensure small gap distance between the electrodes. The device consists of a flexible, electroded beam converging to a fixed and conductive gorund plate on one end. The other end is loaded by different masses which causes the beam to deflect. An applied voltage then begins to close the device beginning at the point of tangency. Furthermore, the soft dielectric used as insulating layer is expected to compensate for microscopic surface inadequacies on the device. The ultrathin and lightweight actuators are capable of lifting masses greater than 1 g more than 7 mm. Simulations match well with experimental results, validating the model.
