Wearable Sensors for Motion Capture

Capturing motion as an intricate part of human existence can lead to tremendous improvements in our quality of life. First, this chapter discusses various application sectors where motion capture technology can be employed and highlights the merits of employing wearable motion capture in each of these sectors. Next, it explores various methods and sensors that can be used to capture human motion in confined or contrived settings, including motion capture labs, electromagnetic‐based sensors, magnetic motion capture, imaging methods, and more. The chapter then discusses wearable approaches to motion capture, including inertial measurement units, bending/deformation sensors, time‐of‐flight sensors, and received signal strength‐based sensors. Finally, it concludes with a summary of the reported technologies, a lookout into the future, and a comparative table summarizing the advantages and limitations of the technologies described throughout the chapter.
