Design and implementation of efficient torque control of induction motor for Electric Vehicles

Direct Torque controller is a modern strategy adopted for controlling the torque of Induction motor for Electric vehicle applications. Yet, the prime drawback of this linear controller is that, it is operated in a controlled bandwidth such that, huge overshoots and ringing is avoided. The controlled bandwidth has a direct impact on the high switching frequency. Here a totally unique nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) scheme is proposed to regulate the speed and torque of the induction motor which enables inverter to operate at lower switching frequency. The system provides an algorithm which will increase the time of execution and obtaining the result. The system performance is matched to general DTC scheme through MATLAB/Simulink. The outcomes exhibit an enhanced control over sloping roads with lesser torque ripple. There is a reduction of 10 times in the switching frequency of inverter compared to the classical DTC approach. Further the 3-level Active Neutral Point Clamped Converter (ANPC) enhances the conversion potency. System performance was verified with an experimental set up.
