A Battery-Free Sensor Based Fall Monitoring System for the Elderly on a Staircase

This paper proposes a battery-free sensor-based monitoring system on a staircase to distinguish fall and non-fall events in the elderly without invading individual privacy. The system distinguishes three events on a staircase such as neutral, walking, and falling with the use of passive RFID sensor tags, which are capable of pressure detection, and machine learning-based on pressure values and the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). This research will focus on expanding the monitoring fields on the staircases since there are more than 19% of the elderly die from accidental falls on a staircase and develop a system with a high detection rate.
