Analysis of Main Characteristics of Music Genre Based on PCA Algorithm

Music has been part of human societies since the beginning of time as an essential component of cultural heritage. Many factors can influence artists when they create a new piece of music. These factors play an important role in the popularity of music. Taking the Pop/Rock genre as the research object, we choose Dance-ability, Energy, Valence, Tempo, Loudness, Mode, Key, acousticness, instrumentalness, liveness, speechiness, duration_ms, popularity and count 14 indicators to construct an evaluation index system, and use the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to analyze the change law of the factor characteristics of the Pop/Rock genre development. The results show that there is a big difference between each indicator, the five indicators of energy, valance, tempo, count, and liveness of this genre are very prominent in PCA. The higher a song or artist scores on these five indicators are, the more consistent the song or artist is with the Pop/Rock genre and the more popular the song or artist is with loyal fans of the genre. Therefore, if artists in the Pop/Rock field want to be more popular when they are creating music, please increase the energy, valance, tempo, count, and liveness of your work as much as possible!
