How can OPM-based modeling disambiguate system concepts in ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288?

ISO/IEC/IEEE FDIS 15288:2014(E) is one of the most fundamental systems engineering international standards. In order to ascertain this document's conciseness and clarity, modeling it formally is valuable, as it provides insight into the authors' intent and reveals ambiguities. In this work, we evolve an OPM ISO 19450 model that aims to best reflect the implied authors' intent expressed in the first material clause of 15288, based on carefully reading it while also referring to the accompanying figures. This modeling activity has pointed out a number of significant ambiguities in the document that arise from lack of coherence between the text and the figures, clearly pointing to the value of having a formal conceptual model as the underlying backbone of standards in general and this central standard in particular. This work is a first step in using OPM to model the 15288 life cycle processes along with the objects associated with them.
